Flood Resilience Workshop

Isothane attended the Flood Resilience Workshop organised by the Construction Products Association (CPA) on Wednesday 3rd August 2016 held at The Building Centre on Store Street in Central London.

the flood resilience workshop

The Flood Resilience Workshop was organised by the Construction Products Association following the Bonfield Flood Resilience roundtable review. Its focus was on the part the manufacturing sector can play in improving the flood resilience of properties across the country. Currently there are 5.5 million homes at risk of flooding in England alone, which is 1 in 6 homes and the events of last years storms highlighted to everyone the devastating affect flooding can have on people and communities.

At the workshop there were members of DEFRA, The Environment Agency, FloodRe and other insurance companies as well as manufacturers with products that can help improve a properties flood resilience.

Isothane manufacture Technitherm® which is a closed cell polyurethane foam product for use in cavity walls. It has KIWA and LABC certification and excellent thermal properties. In “BS85500:2015 Flood resistant and resilient construction. Guide to improving the flood performance of buildings” it advises that only closed cell polyurethane insulation should be used in flood risk areas.  In addition to this advice Technitherm® has passed the BRE’s Flood Resilience Test.

It works by reducing the risk of flood water ingress through cavity walls due to its closed cell structure. The insulation also remains serviceable after flood water recedes, unlike conventional cavity wall insulation materials which can absorb and retain water. Technitherm® can reduce the issues associated with drying out when inappropriate insulation products have been used and become saturated. This means people can get back into their houses quicker, which reduces the upheaval that being away from home causes.

  1. Grant Jesse says:

We have some new surface built external water tanks ( Concrete blockwork / 8″ hollows/ reinforced with steel rod and filled).

We planned to cover the inside with KA tanking slurry and keep them empty over freezing temperatures but would like to know whether your closed cell foam could be used under the tanks or does it compress under great weight at a critical foam thickness?
