The Client: Kevin Parker Horse Boxes Ltd.

The Problem: Horses pose a unique problem; they place large amounts of weight on a relatively small area and need to feel confident that they will not slip, particularly on the way up the ramp. If they are worried from previous slips it becomes a major loading problem, very stressful and dangerous. Because of the unique needs of horsebox owners Kevin Parker saw the need for a new solution. They trialled ramp and interior surfaces with many finishes for several months. With over 30 years of experience within the horsebox manufacturing industry they had a good idea of what customers wanted. Ramp coverings tried included carpet, heavy rubber, etc. However these coverings are problematic when wet, water makes them slippery and water always find a way under them. This not only makes the ramp heavier and heavier but also starts to rot the wood and rust any steel or aluminium.

The Solution: Fast-setting spray polyurea Armour-Truck, sprayed to 3mm for the walls and floor. Rubber granules broadcast into the surface on the ramp to achieve extra grip, finished with an encapsulating 1mm finish coat.

The Outcome: This is a tried and tested system and a very versatile coating product. It offers corrosion resistance and waterproofing as well as abrasion protection. It removes the need for gluing or screwing a wall covering into the horse area and also removes the need for matting on the floor. Because Armour-Truck is sprayed over the whole ramp surface, walls and floor in the horse area it is completely waterproof. The granules in the top surface allow grip whilst letting water run underneath. This is the same idea as the tread in tyres that remove water. The finish is extremely neat and looks like new after each power washing.
